Wearable protection. Thai amulets and Sak Yant tattoos are not souvenirs — they are active spiritual objects with specific rules for use.
Thai amulets (Phra Khruang) are small sacred objects — usually images of revered monks or the Buddha — worn on cords around the neck. Their protective power is believed to come directly from the monk who consecrated them. A single amulet blessed by a highly revered monk can be worth millions of baht at auction.
The amulet market is one of Thailand's most serious collector communities. Specialists use magnifying loupes and reference books to authenticate items worth as much as luxury watches.

Never place below waist height
Amulets carry sacred power. Storing them in a trouser pocket or on a low shelf is disrespectful and believed to void their protection.
Do not take into the bathroom
The bathroom is spiritually impure in Thai belief. Remove the amulet or cord before entering — a small hook near the bathroom entrance is common in Thai homes.
Wearing it shows respect
If you receive an amulet as a gift from a Thai person, wearing it is the highest form of appreciation. Not wearing it can cause offence.
Treat with the same respect as a Buddha image
Because many amulets depict the Buddha or revered monks, they should be treated accordingly.
Sak Yant
Sacred geometry tattoos that carry protective powers — activated only through proper conduct.
Legitimate Sak Yant is given by a Lersi (hermit master) or monk at a temple — not a commercial tattoo studio. The master chooses the design based on your personality and needs. You do not pick a pattern from a menu.
Wat Bang Phra in Nakhon Pathom is the most respected source for foreigners. Significant queues, early start recommended.
The tattoo carries rules: avoid alcohol, certain foods, and disrespectful behaviour. Violating these is believed to void the protection.
