The Non-OX is Thailand's premium retirement visa — up to 10 years, structured as 5 + 5. Available only to nationals of specified countries, including the United Kingdom. Significantly higher financial requirements than the standard Non-O or Non-OA. Intended for retirees planning a very long stay.
The Non-OX is for retirees who want long-term certainty in Thailand without annual renewal appointments. It offers up to 10 years of residence in a single process, at the cost of significantly higher financial requirements and restricted nationality eligibility. If you qualify and meet the financial threshold, it removes the ongoing administrative burden of annual extensions.
This guide covers the Non-OX as it stands in July 2026. Because the Non-OX is a specialist visa with specific eligibility criteria, always verify current requirements directly with a Thai embassy before beginning an application.
Nationality Restriction
The Non-OX is available only to nationals of specified countries. The United Kingdom is a confirmed eligible country. If you are not a UK national, confirm your country's eligibility directly with a Thai embassy or consulate before planning an application. Not all nationalities qualify.
From 1 January 2025
Thailand Global e-Visa System
If you are applying for this visa from outside Thailand, your application will normally begin through Thailand's official e-Visa portal — not at the embassy in person.
Since 1 January 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made online visa applications available through 94 Royal Thai Embassies and Consulates-General worldwide. You create an account, select the visa category, upload supporting documents, and pay the fee online. The underlying eligibility requirements, supporting documents, and approval criteria have not changed — only the method of submission.
Thailand e-Visa PortalThe Non-OX is applied for at a Thai embassy or consulate outside Thailand. You cannot apply from inside Thailand. You must be eligible by nationality and meet the financial threshold. On approval, you receive a Non-OX visa stamp.
On entry to Thailand, you receive a 5-year permission to stay. You are not required to make annual extension appointments at Immigration during this period. You must continue 90-day address reporting and obtain re-entry permits before any international travel.
Before your first 5-year permission expires, you apply at a Thai Immigration office for the second 5-year extension. You must still meet the financial requirements at this point. Plan ahead — do not leave this to the last weeks of the first period.
Following the successful extension, you receive a further 5-year permission to stay. The same 90-day reporting and re-entry permit requirements apply throughout this second period.
The Non-OX does not mean 10 years with zero contact with Immigration. The 90-day address report is still required throughout the full period, and a re-entry permit must be purchased before leaving Thailand on any international trip. What you avoid is the annual extension appointment — which is the main administrative burden removed for Non-OX holders.
The Non-OX is not available to all nationalities. It is restricted to nationals of specified countries. The United Kingdom is a confirmed eligible country. Verify your country's eligibility directly with a Thai embassy before beginning any application process.
You must be at least 50 years old at the time of application.
The Non-OX has two options. Option 1: 3,000,000 THB deposited in a Thai bank. Option 2: 1,800,000 THB deposited in a Thai bank plus verifiable annual income of at least 1,200,000 THB, with total Thai bank funds increased to 3,000,000 THB within one year of arrival. Both options are significantly higher than the 800,000 THB standard for the Non-O and Non-OA.
Health insurance meeting the government's requirements is mandatory for the Non-OX and must be maintained throughout your stay, including across both permission periods.
The Non-OX does not permit employment in Thailand. It is a retirement visa.
The initial Non-OX application must be submitted at a Thai embassy or consulate outside Thailand. You cannot apply from inside Thailand.
฿3,000,000
Deposited in a Thai bank account in your name. The full 3,000,000 THB must be in place at the time of application.
฿1,800,000
Initial Thai bank deposit, plus verifiable annual income of at least 1,200,000 THB. Total Thai bank funds must be increased to 3,000,000 THB within one year of arrival.
Both financial options are significantly higher than the 800,000 THB standard for the Non-O and Non-OA. Always confirm the current figures directly with a Thai embassy before committing — these thresholds are subject to update.
Health insurance meeting the government's requirements is mandatory for the Non-OX and must be maintained for the full duration of your stay — including across both the initial 5-year permission and any subsequent extension.
Given that the Non-OX is a 10-year commitment and that Thailand's private hospital costs can be substantial, comprehensive coverage is both a legal requirement and a practical necessity. Confirm the current approved insurer and coverage requirements with a Thai embassy at the time of application.

5-year extension application
Before your first 5-year permission to stay expires, you must apply at a Thai Immigration office for the second 5-year extension. Do not leave this to the last weeks — allow time for the application process.
90-day address reporting
Required throughout the full 10-year period, including within each 5-year block. Can be done in person, by post, or via the Thai Immigration online portal.
Re-entry permit before travel
Leaving Thailand without a valid re-entry permit cancels your permission to stay — even within the 5-year block. Purchase a multiple re-entry permit (3,800 THB) if you plan regular international travel.
TM.30 on return or address change
Required each time you return from international travel or change residential address. Your landlord must file it. Confirm it is current before the year 5 extension appointment.
No employment
Employment is prohibited for the full duration of the Non-OX. The visa is strictly a retirement category.
The vast majority of retirees will be choosing between the Non-O and Non-OA. The Non-OX is a genuine option, but the financial threshold places it out of reach for most applicants.
| Visa | Best for |
|---|---|
| Non-O | Most retirees already in Thailand or wanting the simplest retirement route. |
| Non-OA | People retiring directly from their home country who don't mind the additional paperwork and insurance. |
| Non-OX | Wealthier retirees from eligible countries who can comfortably meet the higher financial requirements and want a longer-term visa with fewer renewals. |
The Non-OX rewards careful preparation. These are the points that cause problems.
The Non-OX is restricted to specified nationalities. Assuming you are eligible without confirming with a Thai embassy wastes significant preparation time and money. Verify eligibility first — before arranging finances or documentation.
Even within a 5-year permission block, leaving Thailand without a re-entry permit cancels your permission to stay. This is one of the most common — and expensive — errors for long-stay visa holders of all types. Purchase a multiple re-entry permit before any international trip.
The 10-year Non-OX requires an active application before the first 5-year period expires. Missing this window does not automatically extend your stay — you would need to restart the process. Set a clear reminder well in advance of year 5.
The 90-day address report is still required throughout the full 10 years. Many Non-OX holders mistakenly believe the lack of annual extension visits means less Immigration contact overall. The 90-day reporting obligation does not change.
The Non-OX financial thresholds are materially higher than the standard retirement visa thresholds and can be updated. Confirm the current figures directly with a Thai embassy before making any financial commitments — do not rely on out-of-date information from forums or third-party sites.

The Non-O is the standard retirement route used by most long-term expats — renewable annually, available to all nationalities, less documentation.
