Launched in July 2024, the Destination Thailand Visa quickly became the standard route for remote professionals in Southeast Asia — a legitimate 5-year multiple-entry framework for a 10,000 THB fee, without the grey-area tourist visa cycling it replaced.
This guide covers the DTV's mechanics, eligibility, and application process — including what's genuinely changed in how it's enforced through 2026, not just what the official requirements say on paper.
What's Actually Changed for 2026
The 500,000 THB threshold itself hasn't moved since launch — but embassies now systematically reject lump-sum deposits and want to see the balance held continuously for 3 to 6 months. Reported first-review failure rates on this point alone run as high as 30–50% for self-filed applications.
Separately, Thai language schools have been removed from the soft-power category entirely. If studying Thai is your route in, you need the ED or ED Plus visa now, not the DTV.
DTV Visa Mechanics
The DTV grants a five-year multiple-entry allowance. Every entry gives you a stamp permitting a stay of up to 180 days, extendable once per entry for a further 180 days at local immigration for 10,000 THB — a continuous stay of up to 360 days before a border run is needed.
5-Year Validity
Multiple-entry allowance valid for 60 months. No limit on exits or re-entries.
180-Day Stamp
A fresh 180-day stay permit on every physical arrival. No re-entry permits required.
In-Country Extension
Extend your 180-day stay by a further 180 days at local immigration for 10,000 THB.
Family Inclusions
DTV holders can sponsor their legal spouse and dependent children under 20.
Eligibility Criteria
The DTV has some of the most accessible financial thresholds of any long-stay Thai visa, with no minimum monthly salary check. The requirements below reflect how they're actually being enforced in 2026, not just the headline figures.
500,000 THB Savings — Properly Seasoned
You must show at least 500,000 THB (roughly £11,300 / $14,000) in a personal bank account — overseas or Thai. Embassies now want statements showing that balance held continuously for 3 months at minimum, with some asking for 6. A single recent deposit, even for the full amount, is routinely rejected.
Remote Work or Soft-Power Proof
Remote worker: employment contract, company profile, or freelance invoices showing regular work with foreign entities.
Soft power: a certified enrollment letter for Muay Thai training, an accredited Thai culinary programme, or wellness/medical treatment. Casual short courses no longer qualify — embassies increasingly expect programmes of 6 months or longer.
No longer eligible: Thai language schools. Use the ED or ED Plus visa instead if that's your reason for applying.
External Application
Applications go through the official e-Visa portal or in person at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate outside Thailand. Popular hubs include London, Vientiane and Kuala Lumpur — you cannot apply from inside Thailand.
