Transport in Thailand
BTS, Grab, songthaews and motorbike taxis. How to move around Thailand like a resident, not a tourist.
The Rabbit card works across BTS and can be topped up at any station. It saves time at ticket machines and earns you minor discounts. Available at all BTS service counters for 200 THB (50 THB deposit, 50 THB initial credit).
Bangkok's rail network has expanded significantly. The BTS covers the main expat corridors — Sukhumvit, Silom, Siam — while the MRT subway handles cross-city routes. For most expats living in central Bangkok, you can manage without a car.
16 — 59 THB
Covers Sukhumvit, Silom and Siam corridors. Fast, air-conditioned and reliable. Rabbit card recommended for daily users.
17 — 42 THB
Connects Chatuchak, Chinatown and Silom. Integrates with BTS at interchange stations. Token or stored-value card.
60 — 300 THB
Thailand's dominant ride-hailing app. Set fare before boarding. Works across all major cities. Essential install on arrival.
Outside the rail network, Grab is the default for most expats. Metered taxis remain useful late at night or with heavy luggage. Motorbike taxis are the fastest way through Bangkok traffic for short hops.
35 THB flag fall
Always insist on the meter. Refuse fixed-price offers. Expressway tolls paid by passenger. Available 24/7.
10 — 50 THB
Orange-vested drivers wait at dedicated stands. Fastest option in traffic. Negotiate before boarding. Helmet mandatory.
10 — 40 THB
Shared red truck taxis common in Chiang Mai and Phuket. Fixed routes or negotiated charter. Essential in smaller cities.
These are the apps every expat in Thailand uses daily. Download them before you land.
