What embassies can and cannot do — and what to do in each scenario.
Contact your embassy immediately. Bring any ID copy, a police report (from Tourist Police 1155), two passport photos, and completed form. Emergency travel documents can be issued within 24–48 hours for most Western embassies.
Thai law requires police to notify your embassy on request. Invoke this right immediately. Do not sign any statement without a lawyer present. The embassy can provide a list of English-speaking Thai lawyers — they cannot provide legal representation themselves.
Contact your embassy consular section and the Tourist Police simultaneously. The embassy will coordinate with Thai authorities to release the body and manage repatriation paperwork. Ensure your insurer's emergency line is also informed.
Most embassies have a welfare fund for genuine destitution — not a loan service. The UK Embassy Consular team can contact next of kin to arrange emergency funds via bank transfer. This is a last resort, not a general service.
